We’re excited to share some big news! Barnsley Recovery Steps is now part of a historic merger, combining the expertise and resources of two leading national charities: Humankind and Richmond Fellowship. Together, they share the same core values, ambitions, and decades of experience supporting people with substance use, mental health, housing, and more. The newly merged charity is called Waythrough.
But don’t worry, nothing is changing here at Barnsley Recovery Steps! You’ll still see the same friendly faces in the same places, offering the same support at the same times. We’re still here for you, just as we always have been.
Our vision for the future is simple but powerful:
“To break down the barriers that stop people from getting the support they need to live a life they value.” This means offering a single point of access for mental health, alcohol and substance use, and homelessness services—all under one roof.
Jacob’s Story: A Voice of Lived Experience
Jacob, who was originally supported by Richmond Fellowship, is now a volunteer and an active member of Waythrough’s Heart and Soul group, which represents people with lived experience. He shared his thoughts about the merger:
“There were times in my life when I struggled with both mental health and substance use at the same time. It’s always baffled me that these issues are treated separately when they are so closely linked. One would often block me from getting help with the other.
“Mental health and substance use are deeply connected, and I’m hopeful that this merger will lead to new ways of working that offer more person-centred care.”
Ruth’s Story: Finding Hope
Ruth, who was supported by Humankind, is now also a volunteer and part of the Heart and Soul group. She shared her inspiring journey:
“After being hospitalised with liver failure, I joined Humankind’s Relapse Prevention programme. I’m now 15 months sober and rebuilding my life, one step at a time.
“I’ve struggled with anxiety and depression for as long as I can remember. It took me a long time to find the therapy I needed, but I truly believe that an integrated charity like Waythrough would have helped me get the support I needed much sooner, with fewer obstacles in the way.
“For me, the most important thing is that Waythrough sticks to its promise—one that we helped create:
A Message from Waythrough CEO, Paul Townsley
“We’ve long known that treating drug and alcohol issues, housing problems, and mental health needs separately just doesn’t reflect the complex reality of people’s lives. A more holistic approach is needed—and that’s why I’m thrilled about Waythrough and what we’re going to achieve together.
“Today marks an important step forward, and although it will take time, I’m confident that by working with our partners, we’ll have the experience, skills, and passion to make our vision a reality.”
At Barnsley Recovery Steps, we’re really looking forward to celebrating this exciting merger locally and embracing our future as part of Waythrough. We’re here to keep making a difference—together!
