The HOPE team is a vital part of the Barnsley Recovery Steps service, providing support across Barnsley Borough. We’re here to reduce drug-related harm, offer education, and make it easier for people to get the help they need. We work closely with individuals, partner organisations, and the wider community through various services, including:
Our Open Access Duty Service is here for anyone who needs immediate help. We provide harm reduction, expert advice, and support, including prescribing support and a range of health services to improve the lives of those who come to us.
We offer a confidential Needle and Syringe Provision service for people who use drugs. This service, available during our opening hours, includes access to sterile injecting equipment, citric acid, vitamin C, foil, and sexual health items like condoms and home testing kits. You can also talk to us about your drug use and make informed choices. We provide free naloxone kits, which can reverse opioid overdoses and save lives, along with training on how to use them. Our approach is non-judgemental, and we offer the latest harm reduction advice, BBV (blood-borne virus) testing, and help with getting into treatment. We’re also here to connect you with other support services that suit your needs.
The HOPE team is active across Barnsley, reaching out to people who need our help. We work with the Barnsley Homeless team to support people sleeping rough, offering fast-tracked access to services, advice, and harm reduction. Our strong connections with services like Barnsley Housing Options mean we can help people move away from street sleeping and find the right support.
We also provide outreach in various locations across the borough, delivering harm reduction support where it’s most needed. Our drop-in sessions are available at supported housing services, immigration centres, and family hubs, making it easier for people to get help.
We run a 5-day hospital liaison service at Barnsley District General Hospital to support people admitted with drug or alcohol-related health issues. We offer advice, support, and quick access to treatment services for those who need it. We also provide training and support for hospital staff to ensure that people using substances get the right care during their stay.
In partnership with the hospital’s urology department, we offer a monthly clinic for people affected by ketamine use, such as those with ketamine cystitis. Our service includes harm reduction advice, fast-tracked support, group work, and peer support.
The HOPE team offers a range of training sessions for both professionals and the public. For more details, please check out our training prospectus.
If you need custom training or want to know more about what we offer, please contact us at hopetraining@humankindcharity.org.uk. We can tailor all our training sessions to your needs, whether in-person or online.
