The four sessions of First Steps will introduce you to Barnsley Recovery Steps/Barnsley in Recovery. You’ll explore the reasons we need support with addiction, dependency, or problematic relationships with alcohol and/or drugs. This is your opportunity to consider your goals, identify the support you need, and learn how we can assist you.
In this phase, you’ll receive support to reduce your alcohol or drug use and prepare for clinical detoxification, if necessary. The eight sessions cover topics such as the nature of addiction, understanding why we engage in addictive behaviours, dealing with triggers and cravings, and the significance of detox as the first step in recovery. We’ll also start planning for life after detox. Where appropriate, you’ll be encouraged to attend Mutual Aid groups like AA, NA, SMART Recovery, and our own Here and Now group meetings, as well as other community-based recovery activities.
With the physical dependency of your addiction addressed, we now focus on the mental and emotional aspects in the next 24 sessions. At this stage, you must be abstinent from alcohol and drugs and willing to undergo random testing. We’ll explore the concepts of recovery in depth, helping you develop your own ‘toolbox’ of strategies to prevent relapse and build a supportive network of others in recovery. This is a collective journey—”only you can do it, but you can’t do it alone.” You’ll learn to be more aware and accepting of your feelings and emotions, and how to act on them in constructive ways, practicing this in Here and Now groups. Additionally, we introduce The Five Ways to Wellbeing—a set of realistic, achievable actions to help you feel happier and more content with your life, while building confidence and recovery capital.
