Breaking the Silence & Bringing Support Closer to Home

At Barnsley Recovery Steps, we’re here to change the way people think and talk about alcohol and other drugs in the North East Area of Barnsley. Our goal is to make support more accessible, so no one feels alone or unsure about where to turn.

We understand that getting help isn’t always easy, especially if travelling into town for appointments is a barrier. That’s why we bring the service to you, whether that’s meeting you in your own village or even in the comfort of your home.

We also offer bespoke training sessions, open to anyone who wants to learn more about alcohol and drugs or simply understand how our service works. Whether you’re a professional looking for guidance, a community group wanting to start a conversation, or just someone curious to learn more, we’re happy to bring our training to you.

We’re also working closely with other local professionals, building partnerships, offering advice, and making sure that help is easy to find whenever it’s needed.

Through our work, we want to make conversations about alcohol and drugs easier and more open. Stigma has created whispers and silence, but knowledge and understanding can break those walls down.

Meet Nash

Hi, I’m Nash, and I’m proud to be the HOPE Outreach and Engagement Worker for the North East Area of Barnsley. This isn’t just a job for me, it’s personal. I grew up in this area, and for years, I felt like there was more that could be done to support our communities. So, when the opportunity came up, I knew I had to go for it.”

“Like many others, I had little awareness of Barnsley Recovery Steps before I joined in 2021. I didn’t know how much support was out there, let alone how long it had been available. That realisation really stuck with me, how many people are struggling in silence simply because they don’t know where to turn?

“Now, I get to put my passion for helping others into action, bringing support and awareness directly into our villages. I want to make sure that people feel comfortable reaching out, whether it’s for help, a chat, or even just to share ideas on what more we could be doing.”

“I’m friendly, easy-going, and completely non-judgemental. If you need support, want to learn more, or just want to have a conversation, I’m here and ready to listen.

How Can We Help?

  • We offer one-to-one support in the community, be it in someone’s home or meeting locally like at a library, church or even a local café.

  • We’re developing groups for the local community. This is in the research stage as we need to find out what the people of the villages might want from a group. Once we know we can set this up, offer training to keep it going under it’s own steam by the member and for the members and help with identifying finding sources if the group wishes to expand.
  • Advice and practical help for people reducing or stopping use.
  • Information about harm reduction and recovery.

Make a Real Difference in Your Community

Hi, I’m Marilia, a Health and Social Care student and a passionate volunteer with Barnsley Recovery Steps. I’ve been shadowing Nash as an outreach worker, and it has been an incredible journey. Seeing first-hand the positive impact of Barnsley Recovery Steps on people’s lives has been both eye-opening and inspiring.

It’s amazing to connect with people who need support, to challenge misconceptions about substance misuse, and to be part of a compassionate, non-judgemental community. Volunteering has not only helped me grow but has also been truly fulfilling, knowing I am making a real difference.

What Does a Community Champion Do?

As a Community Champion, you’ll play a key role in:

Raising awareness of support services,

Helping reduce stigma around substance misuse,

Providing vital information to those in need,

Connecting with the community and supporting local initiatives.

No experience is needed, just a willingness to listen, learn, and help. You’ll be supported every step of the way!
