Hidden Harm is the impact that a parent, carer or significant adult’s alcohol or drug use can have on a child. The harm is often called “hidden” because it may not be obvious to others, and children may not talk about what they are experiencing.
Children and young people affected by parental alcohol or drug use can often go unnoticed. They may attend school regularly, appear resilient, or never disclose their experiences, yet still be living with significant challenges at home.
Sometimes the impact of parental drug or alcohol use is not always obvious. Parental drug or alcohol use can affect children, young people and families in ways that are not always easy to see.
It can shape daily routines and a young person’s sense of stability, even when nothing looks “wrong” on the surface. Children may take on responsibilities beyond their years, or become skilled at hiding what’s happening at home. This can show up as anxiety, low self-esteem, or difficulty concentrating at school.
